About Johnnie R. S. McKnight
Johnnie R. S. McKnight is a public school teacher, union representative, and candidate for State Representative in Springfield’s 11th Hampden District. His life story is rooted in resilience, community, and a deep belief in giving back to the place that shaped him.
I know what it’s like to have the odds stacked against you and still care deeply about where you come from. If my experience has taught me anything, it’s to give back to those who have given me so much. That’s what this campaign is all about, building community and rebuilding lives.
Growing up on Dawes Street in Springfield, things weren’t always easy. At just three months old, my mother was battling addiction and made the difficult decision to give me up to my grandmother, Betty. She became my rock, doing everything she could to shield me from the pain that addiction causes families.
I grew up with a medical condition that made it hard for me to walk and required frequent visits to Shriners Hospital in Springfield. I will never forget my grandmother carrying me up Carew Street Hill to appointments, my baby feet bound in casts. Those moments taught me what it truly means for someone to show up for you unconditionally.
At age 11, everything changed when I went to live with my father. That period of my life was marked by instability, abuse, and fear. I experienced homelessness for the first time, packing my belongings in the middle of the night without knowing where we were going. Food insecurity became a constant, and at times I stole groceries just to eat. I didn’t understand why this was happening to me, and it deeply affected my sense of safety and self-worth.
Not long after moving in with my father, I was incarcerated at the Department of Youth Services (DYS), a turning point that could have defined my future. Instead, with reflection and the intervention of a caseworker who recognized the instability of my home life, I was able to transition out and move in with my aunt. For the first time, I experienced stability. I found structure through sports and went on to win a high school football state championship.
Education became my pathway out of poverty. I became the first in my family to attend college, earning an Associate Degree in Business Administration from Holyoke Community College, followed by a Bachelor’s Degree and a Master’s Degree in Business Management from American International College in Springfield, Massachusetts.
The teachers and mentors who believed in me shaped the course of my life. Because of them, I dedicated my career to giving back as a public school teacher, youth worker, and community advocate, even returning to the same facility where I was once incarcerated to help young people find a different path forward.
Today, I own a home in Forest Park, Springfield, where I live with my two daughters, Autumn and Cora. I’m running for State Representative because I know firsthand what happens when people are overlooked, and what’s possible when a community chooses to invest in its people.
Johnnie R. S. McKnight is running for State Representative to bring lived experience, accountability, and real advocacy back to the 11th Hampden District.
